1. About these terms

Typano is a typing and piano tutor provided by the Typano team ("we", "us"). These terms apply to the website, the app and everything you can do in them (the "service"). By creating an account or using the service you agree to them.

If you are using a business or school account, the person who accepts these terms confirms they can do so for the organisation.

Nothing in these terms takes away rights you have by law as a consumer, for example under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 in the UK.

2. Your account

You must be 18 or over (or the age of majority where you live) to hold an account. Children learn through profiles inside an adult's account and never have their own login.

Give accurate details and keep them up to date, especially your email address and country: the country decides which parental-consent rules apply and, on the Family plan, where the plan can be used.

Keep your password, any authenticator codes and the 4-digit parent PIN to yourself. You are responsible for what happens on your account, including in the profiles you create. Tell us straight away at [email protected] if you think someone else has used it.

If you sign in with Google, Google's own terms also apply to that sign-in. You can add a password at any time and then disconnect Google.

3. Children and parents

Before the first child profile is created, the parent or guardian gives verifiable consent (see the privacy policy). The account holder is responsible for each child's use of the service and for the settings they choose, such as session caps, friends and approvals.

Imported songs, AI-generated lessons and friend requests for a child wait for a parent's approval. The parent PIN protects the parent area, account settings and purchases.

Our approach to keeping children safe is set out on the safeguarding page (Safeguarding).

4. Plans, trials and payment

The Free plan is free and has no time limit. Paid plans, their prices and what they include are shown on the pricing page (Pricing) before you pay. Prices include VAT or sales tax where it applies.

Paid plans are subscriptions that renew automatically each month or year, at the price shown when you subscribed, until you cancel. If a price changes we'll email you at least 30 days before the change applies to your next renewal, and you can cancel before then.

If a plan has a free trial, it turns into a paid subscription at the end of the trial unless you cancel before it ends. The trial length and the price after it are shown before you start.

Payments are processed by our payment provider, Stripe. We never see or store your full card number. If a payment fails we'll try again and tell you; if it still can't be taken, the account moves to Free.

The Family plan covers up to 5 profiles in one household and can only be used in the household's verified home country.

5. Cancelling and refunds

You can cancel at any time under Account → Plan. You keep the paid features until the end of the period you've paid for; then the account moves to Free and your profiles and progress are kept.

Your right to cancel: if you're a consumer in the UK or the EU, you can cancel a new paid subscription within 14 days of the first payment and get a refund. Because the service starts straight away when you ask for it, we may keep a proportionate amount for the days you had the paid plan. Email [email protected] or use the contact form to ask for this.

Outside that 14-day period, payments are not refundable for part-used periods, except where the law says otherwise or the service hasn't worked as described. If something has gone wrong, contact us and we'll put it right.

Unused AI credits and song imports don't carry over to the next month and have no cash value.

6. AI features and credits

Some features use artificial intelligence, for example simplifying an imported song or writing a drill from the keys you miss. They use AI credits from your plan's monthly allowance; on the Family plan a parent can set a cap for each child.

AI output can be wrong or unsuitable. Lessons made with AI for a child wait for a parent's approval, and our team reviews AI-generated course content before it's published to everyone. Tell us if anything looks wrong.

7. Songs you import

You can import MIDI and MusicXML files (and, where offered, other sources) to practise. Only import music you own or have permission to use, or that is in the public domain. Imports are private to your account unless our team adds a song to the shared library.

You keep any rights you have in what you import. You give us permission to store, process and convert it (for example into arrangements and sheet music) so we can provide the service to you.

We may remove an import, or stop an account importing songs, if we receive a valid copyright complaint or believe it breaks these terms or the law. Rights holders can contact us through the contact page (Contact).

8. Our content

Courses, lessons, exercises, games, recordings, artwork and software in the service belong to us or our licensors. You may use them for your own and your family's learning. Please don't copy, sell, redistribute or scrape them.

9. Fair use

When you use the service, please don't:

  • try to break, overload, probe or get around the security of the service, or reverse-engineer it except where the law allows;
  • use automated tools to access it, other than ordinary browsers and assistive technology;
  • share your account outside your household, or resell access;
  • upload anything unlawful, harmful or that infringes someone else's rights;
  • use friends, challenges or any other feature to bully, harass or contact children inappropriately.

We may suspend or close an account that breaks these rules. Unless the risk is serious or the law prevents it, we'll tell you why and give you a chance to respond.

10. Availability and changes to the service

We work hard to keep the service running, but it may sometimes be unavailable, for example during maintenance. Piano connections depend on your browser, device and instrument; the connect guide (Connect) lists what works where.

We improve the service all the time. If we remove a feature that is a major part of a paid plan, we'll tell you in advance and you can cancel and get a refund for the unused part of the period you paid for.

11. Our responsibility to you

We are responsible for loss or damage you suffer that is a foreseeable result of us breaking these terms or failing to use reasonable care and skill. We are not responsible for loss that wasn't foreseeable, or for business losses: the service is for personal and household use.

We don't exclude or limit our liability where it would be unlawful to do so, including for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for your legal rights as a consumer.

If digital content we supply damages a device or other digital content you own because we didn't use reasonable care and skill, we'll repair the damage or compensate you.

12. Closing your account

You can close your account at any time under Account → Data and privacy. Cancel any paid plan first. Profiles you delete are removed for good after 30 days; you can export them before you do.

We may close an account that has broken these terms seriously or repeatedly. Unless the risk is serious or the law prevents it, we'll tell you first.

13. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms, for example when we add features or the law changes. For material changes we'll email account holders at least 30 days before they take effect. If you don't agree, you can close your account before then; paid time you haven't used will be refunded.

14. Complaints and the law that applies

If you have a problem, please contact us first through the contact page (Contact) or at [email protected]. We reply within one working day and aim to resolve complaints within 14 days.

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and its courts can deal with any dispute. If you live elsewhere in the UK or in another country, you can also use your local courts and keep the protection of your local consumer law.
